I am often surprised that people wonder this considering mediums connect with departed loved ones and other spiritual beings, but the answer to this is YES. If you read My Real Story, you will learn that my journey to psychic awareness was a by-product of turning to God for healing. I did not expect, plan, or seek to become psychic. I was turning to a Higher Power for assistance, so what transpired from that expectation actually took me for a loop.
Nevertheless, I think what most people are really asking me is if I am a Christian. In fact, I have even had people say that they would pray for me, as if somehow my psychic path has led me astray and into sin. I believe they say this without knowing anything about my path and my initial intent to follow God’s guidance. I understand their concern though, as my own Christian roots often plagued me – as did my scientific background.
While the bible addresses spiritual gifts, including the gift of foresight, prophecy, and discernment of spirits, somehow I don’t think we expect these to still be present day gifts but rather gifts of days gone by. It wasn’t until I connected with the Christina Mystics that I began to take greater ease in my experiences.
Ursula King is a professor of theology and religious studies at the University of Bristol in England. Her book, Christian Mystics, Their Lives and Legacies throughout the Ages, was one that made me realize that Psi-based experiences take place both inside and outside of religious contexts. In other words, many people will accept a psi-based experience IF it takes place with a religious context. Take that same ability and remove it from a religious framework and suddenly it’s evil and grotesque.
What we need to understand is that psi functioning is merely a “process,” and a process that can be used within a religious context or outside of it. Granted, we would call the experiences of the Christian Mystics, almost all of whom are saints by the way, as mystical or spiritual, but underneath the experiences lurks the very scientific and natural psi process that allowed their experiences to take place – visions, messages, insights, written works, and even miracles, healings, and even claims of levitations.
We must not confuse the process of psi with how it is used & what results from it. This is also why we need to understand that just because someone is psi prone or claims to be a psychic does not mean they are spiritual. Utilizing the process and being ethical or even spiritual do not necessarily go hand in hand.
In fact, during the Stargate Program, the United States government taught remote viewing skills (a psi based ability) for the potential purpose of spying. “From 1978 onward, the program engaged in operational remote viewing for clients in government organizations, which besides the CIA and FBI included the Defense Intelligence Agency, Secret Service, Air Force Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency, Army Intelligence and Security Command, US Coast Guard and Drug Enforcement Agency.” You can read more about that program HERE. The Stargate Program is just one of countless examples of how psi is an ability that was utilized outside of a spiritual context.
When it comes to the Christian mystics, I am particularly fond of St. Teresa of Avila who believed firmly that she could hear God’s voice and received messages and information from Him. I have all of her works and took great comfort that she too struggled when she heard God’s voice and His bidding’s for her. I came to many of the same conclusions about my own experiences as did she, and felt affirmed by her struggles to embrace what must have been a very difficult thing for a woman of her time and in her circumstances.
Because of my spiritual experiences and connections, I personally do not subscribe to any particular religion. I am deeply spiritual and believe in a Higher Power, but I also personally think that everyone has a right to their own idea of God, no matter what religion a person holds dear. I do not believe God judges or is confined to one religion, and if for someone reason He or It is, then it’s still not my place to point fingers or to say what’s right or wrong. I believe that someone’s vision and relationship with a Higher Power is personal and it does not involve me.
And, while I may call my Higher Power by the term God, I also refer to it as Source, Divine, Cosmic Consciousness, or even just the Universe. To me, all of these terms are interchangeable, so I don’t believe the label we use really matters. In truth, any word will always fall short of the true essence of what defines God and will vary with the individual. For example, if we are more prone to a scientific approach, then we might believe that God is the Infinite or the Universe. Regardless of the label, it is the Supreme All That Is to which I believe we all refer.
I will close by saying that I once asked God about His nature as well as the nature of our soul. The reply was that if we cannot even understand the vastness of our own physical universe, then how can we possibly expect to comprehend the majesty of God or even our own divine soul. We stand on the earth peering up at the stars believing that be seeing them above we know the full truth, when in fact, we only can see and grasp a small portion of the vastness that is beyond.
In this way, what is Divine and what is our soul are simply things beyond our earthly comprehension, so in my opinion this means that arguing about who is right or wrong is futile. It’s not for me to judge someone’s faith or their relationship with God or even a belief in no God. I would hope that others would allow me the same courtesy while still knowing that my intentions and connections are always to do what is ethical, healing, loving, kind, and spiritually-based. While I know others may sometimes judge my path or my beliefs, no one has walked in my shoes and knows what has taken place within the confines of my spiritual relationship.
So yes, I believe in God. But more importantly, I try to have a relationship with that Source and to follow where I am led, even when it’s difficult and I don’t understand or when people disagree with it.
Cheers & Blessings,
Carol
