What’s my purpose? Why am I here? What should I do? Should I go here or go there? What direction do I take? Why am I going through this, what does it mean, and what can I do about it? Who Am I?
I sometimes wonder “who I am.” From time to time I think we all do, however, on one particular occasion I was feeling abnormally confused. As a result, I sat down to journal and to see what advice I could gain from Spirit. I often connect with spiritual wisdom through writing, so I was hoping for a few wise words to help me define “who I am.” I expected words such as wife, woman, medium, writer, daughter, sister, teacher, and caretaker. Instead, I received a broader, more poignant reply. Because it’s so important and it came from spirit, I wanted to share it with you now – so here it is:
“You are a spiritual being living a physical life and your only separation between the two are your perceptions of each – that one is apart and different from the other. Each serves the other! To create change, you simply live “The Truth” and “your truth.”
Was that the reply you hoped for? It sure wasn’t the one I wanted. Then again, spirit rarely gives us what we want, opting instead for what we need. So I pondered the simplicity of the words, only to realize how profound and simple they really are.
“I am a spiritual being!”
Ok, I get that.
“I am living a physical life.”
I definitely get that!
“And the reason I see these as separate from one another is because of my perceptions.”
This statement tells me that I have false perceptions about the spiritual and physical life, otherwise I would see them as only one life. I think this is important because we tend to think of our physical life as being here and now, and when we die, we somehow begin our spiritual life. But if we start to examine what is being shared in this wisdom, we realize that this is the perception that needs to be changed. The wisdom states that the spiritual and physical are not apart or different from each other but are actually one. We are spirit NOW – simply spirit living in the physical world.
The wisdom also goes on to say:
“Each serves the other!”
This means the physical holds value for the spiritual and the spiritual holds value for the physical. But how? What does that mean for who I am and why I’m here? The answer is in the message!
“To create change…”
Ok, so I need to do something, and it seems that I need to change my view about the physical and spiritual aspects of myself. To do that I have to do the following…
“We live “The Truth”…”
Truth with a capital “T” meaning the larger Universal Truths! These include such things as love, choice, wisdom, grace, joy, forgiveness, and so many more. Big Truths with a capital “T” are those that apply to all people. They are Universal and therefore are implied with a capital “T.”
“…and “our truth.”
Our truth with a lower case “t” is the truth of who we are. It is our personal truth. This includes our gender, race, faith, and other physical and cultural aspects of who we are. Our personal truth with a lower case “t” also includes our knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, feelings, and experiences. It is everything that makes us uniquely who we are, and as unique beings, we will each have our own unique truth.
So what does all of this mean for “who we are?” It sets a very large precedent, asking us to comprehend that we are both spiritual and physical, and that we need to find a way to embrace both. It also asks us to look at who we are and to see the truth of our life. For me this meant not only that I was a white female with bad knees who has a husband and three dogs, it also meant that my illnesses and Psi awakening was a part of my truth. My truth is also that I like to talk a lot, and that I love using my voice to share my experiences with others. My truth is that I love to write, that I love Zumba, and that I come from a divorced household. My truth is that I live in America and that my childhood was Christian, even though my outlook on God and that faith has changed as a result of my experiences. I have many truths about who I am, and so do you.
But how do we live that truth that is our own, in combination with the greater “Truth?” I’ll touch on that in the next post…… (Part Two – Who Are We?)
